Lucy’s underwater podcast playlist

Next time you need to spend 6 hours or more underwater, these pods will pass the time down there…

1
Keeping the doors open (Documentary on one)

Recorded in a local pub in Cork over a period of a year I think. Voices of the owners and customers are really interesting. You get a great sense of the area and how much the people who live there love it.

2
The Tally Men of Tralee (Documentary on one)

This is a brilliant fly-on-the-wall look inside a community I never even knew existed.

3
Quiz show (this American life)

What starts as a man’s account of what it was like when he was on the Irish version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire, ends up becoming him telling his life story. It’s like an Irish Slumdog Millionaire.

4
Somewhere in the Arabian sea (this American life)

Life aboard an aircraft carrier. 5,000 young people with loads of different jobs and loads of raging hormones!

5
24 hours at the Golden Apple (this American life)

Feel like hanging out in a diner for 24 hours and talking to people?

6
Santaland Diaries (this American life)

I love anything written and read by this guy — David Sedaris. He’s hilarious.

7
Space (Radiolab)

Beautiful story about the Voyager space mission and Carl Sagan

8
Goo and you (Radiolab)

This just blew my mind.

9
Disintegration loops (Radiolab)

This one gave me goosebumps. The sound of a song disappearing.

10
Jump blue (BBC between the ears)

One of the most immersive audio stories I’ve ever heard

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b07z43ss

11
Second side up (BBC between the ears)

An intriguing story of a man’s obsession with becoming a radio DJ.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08ky8b1

12
The book seller (Roald Dahl’s served with a twist)

Dahl’s dark side. Very tight, clever stories about horrible people with terrible schemes. Beautifully narrated by Charles Dance. This is my favorite one.

13
Boy named Thomas (Snap judgment)

A real life ghost story. It’s based in Ireland and will give you chills for sure.

14
Analysis, parapraxis, Elvis (Revisionist history)

Malcolm Gladwell takes a second look at moments passed in history and investigates them anew. Here is my favorite. I’ll never think of Elvis in the same way again.

15
Lost at Sea — Jon Ronson

This is technically an audio book but Ronson’s voice is so engaging that it doesn’t feel like one. Here he investigates weird incidents that occur on cruise ships, it’s bizarre but brilliant.
